The Skills Series: 11 Essential Skills Every Youth needs to Excel ~ #2 ~ Learning Skills

{And Allah has extracted you from the wombs of your mothers not knowing a thing, and He made for you hearing and vision and hearts that perhaps you would be grateful.} Qur’an 16: 78

What is your earliest memory of a learning experience or do I call it learning adventure?

Perhaps you were able to perform a minor operation on your favourite toy, then put it back successfully to it’s normal working condition.

Or maybe you made it to the top of that picture-like tree in your neighbourhood.

Can you remember?

Regardless, you must have utilised some essential skills in order to achieve your purpose.

And similarly, for everything you have learned from birth till date, you had to use a combination of skills. These could easily have been as a result of both formal and informal learning experiences.

The point is, you never actually stop learning in life – whether actively or passively. And striving for positive change should be your goal at all times.

Never stop learning because life never stops teaching – Unknown

From smiling and feeding; walking and writing; to driving & cooking – each came with it’s learning process and oppotunities to accomplish target goals and changes.

Each day brings with it different learning opportunities.

With the right skills you can maximise your learning and increase your potential in life. You can develop yourself through beneficial learning and bring benefit to the Ummah as well.

Some of the skills that can enhance one’s learning are – observation, reading, research, reporting, mind mapping, story telling, modelling, writing/note taking, critical thinking & dialogue.

And since learning goes beyond the four walls of a classroom and a degree program, you owe it to yourself to develop & maximise these skills fully. You can improve on your learning skills through practice and determination and connecting with those that have greater experience.

With better skills, you have the chance to improve on your knowledge and an opportunity to act on what you learn.

Basically, you can think better, live better and act better when you keep learning at an optimal level. It empowers you while keeping you mentally active & engaged.

And the more you learn, the more you realise that you have much more to learn.

Sharpen your learning skills today so as make your learning beneficial.

You may have the mindset that your home, jewellry, artwork etc are the ultimate forms of investment, but have you considered that your learning weighs far higher on the scales of investment than any of these.

You can become an active member of the ummah through learning and taking action on the knowledge, so as to bring about change. Never for a second think that your life is boring. Gain some beneficial knowledge, along with stimulation & reward for your learning.

”….The learned are the heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets leave neither dinar nor dirham, leaving only knowledge, and he who takes it takes a big fortune.” [Abu Dawud]

Those who learned from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gained mastery of the best of learning skills among other skills. He was an excellent teacher & guide. And he possessed such great intellect and eloquence.

Every moment in your youth especially this present moment brings you fresh learning opportunities.

So, whenever you are faced with a new learning opportunity, ask yourself;
– What do I want to get out this?
– How can I get the most of it?
– How can I make the learning journey & outcome benefit me in the present world and the hereafter?

1. Read each day.
2. Be an observer. Look closely at things you find around & and reflect on those thoughts within you.
3. Put into practice what you learn; mentor and teach others.
4. Start a learning journal.
5. Get a learning mentor.

1. Skip from book to book; blog to blog; video to video without a focus.
2. Think school is the only place to learn.
3. Believe that learning is too expensive.
4. Learn without a goal.
5. Underestimate yourself.

Draft a plan for your learning goals, then take action on that strategy. You will only get better with constant practise. These skills will aid you to become a better Muslim Youth & a lifelong learner while you tap into your intellect and creativity.
